Boy Scouts Will Accept Girls, in Bid to ‘Shape the Next Generation of Leaders’

On Wednesday (10/11), the Boy Scouts of America agreed to let girls become Cub Scouts. The Boy Scouts have more than two million kids across the US earning badges. Girls are allowed to participate in some Boy Scouts programs, but the change means that girls can work their way towards becoming an Eagle Scout. The Boy Scouts say the move is a reflection of what modern families want, and will help girls build leadership skills. The Girl Scouts say it’s already the best girl leadership org out there, and that this is merely a ploy to boost the Boy Scouts’ declining membership numbers. Count this as one of the many headlines the Boy Scouts have been making recently. After lots of scrutiny, they opened membership to transgender boys, and lifted bans on gay members and leaders. As if there isn’t enough already going on

  • The death toll from wildfires across the state – mostly in Northern California – rose to 23. Thousands of homes and buildings have been destroyed, and firefighters are still trying to get them under control. (AP News)
  • Meanwhile, Puerto Rico is still recovering from Hurricane Maria. Last month, the storm hit the island and knocked out power for every single person. As of yesterday, more than 80% of the island is still in the dark and roughly a third of the island still doesn’t have cell service. Last week, the Trump administration rolled out a $29 billion relief package for hurricanes Maria, Harvey, and Irma. Now Congress just has to approve it. (ABC News)

The fallout from sexual harassment and assault allegations against Hollywood Producer, Harvey Weinstein, keeps on rolling.

Recently, model Cara Delevingne came forward to say the Hollywood producer sexually harassed her and once tried to kiss her. Ashley Judd, Angelina Jolie, and Gwyneth Paltrow are also among a growing group of women with similar stories. Weinstein has been fired from his company and his wife is leaving him. Now, the group behind the Oscars is holding an emergency meeting this weekend to discuss “any actions warranted” against Weinstein and his membership. BAFTA has already decided to suspend him. Speaking of, after the allegations came out, Ben Affleck – who won an Oscar for the Weinstein-produced “Good Will Hunting” – said the news made him “sick.” Then he got called out on Twitter for groping actress Hilarie Burton on TRL back in 2003. However, he apologized on Twitter. (Fox News)

Device can track your eyes to see if you’re lying, company claims

Polygraphs have been the standard for deception detection ever since the technology was invented in 1921, but a Utah-based company called Converus claims to have come up with a faster, cheaper less invasive way to tell if someone is lying. The test is called EyeDetect. It uses a high-resolution infrared camera to track changes in pupil size and differences in the way a subject reads statements. “If a person is under mental load, the pupils dilate,” says John Kircher, chief scientist at Converus and one of the inventors of EyeDetect. “They take longer to read the statements, the fixations in the statements are closer together and they do more re-reading of the statements.” The test takes about 30 minutes and is completely automated, meaning that it can be given to a large number of people without risking the possibility of bias from a human administrator. Results are almost instantaneous and about 86 percent accurate according to Converus. A number of law enforcement agencies in the United States, including the Salt Lake City Police Department, are already using EyeDetect to screen potential hires. Converus says it has sold its tech to 34 countries, where EyeDetect is being used by banks, casinos, and financial institutions in addition to law enforcement groups. The company has also been in discussions with the State Department to use EyeDetect as a screening tool for immigrants and visa applicants. Each EyeDetect station costs about $4,000, and the company charges an additional fee to evaluate each exam. (CNBC)

Women Prefer Shopping To Sex

A recent survey found 52% of women prefer shopping to sex while 93% of men would rather take a tumble than make a purchase. The survey included 1,000 people under the age of 60. Scientists divided those surveyed into two groups. The first were “inspired shoppers,” who bought clothes to make themselves feel good, while the second category were “shop-y-cats,” who shopped just to fit in. The researchers analysed gamma brain waves, which are linked to extreme pleasure, and found that “inspired shoppers” can get a high from shopping, the physiological effects can be compared to intercourse. The survey, which was conducted by Myndplay, found that 84 percent of ‘inspired shoppers’ would get a high when buying clothes. While “shop-y-cats” also experience a high, it was short-lived compared to the “inspired shoppers.” However, when the groups were asked to find something “different,” 89 percent of them found it mentally draining. (RSVP)

Groom-to-be detained for DUI before wedding

A man left his pregnant bride-to-be in tears at their wedding ceremony Saturday after he was detained for drunk driving the night before their big day. The man, surnamed Jiang, was taken into custody late Friday night after he was stopped at a police checkpoint in Shenzhen. Jiang told officers he had consumed “four bottles” while celebrating with family who had flown in for the occasion.  A breathalyzer test showed his blood alcohol level to be .083, video released from the scene shows.
