Carjackers drop off boy found in back seat at school

A pair of carjackers in Chicago wished a boy a good day at school after stealing his parents’ car and finding him in the back seat. The boy, 10-year-old Richard Rodriguez, entered the car and put the key in the ignition and was waiting for his parents when a man and woman entered the car and drove off. He said the pair didn’t notice him until one of them turned around to find him sitting in the back seat. Police said the theft occurred around 6 a.m. on Tuesday (1/24). The woman hastily fled the scene by speeding through the streets of Chicago, doing at least 50 miles an hour. The pair eventually dropped him off in an alley and wished him well before driving away in the stolen vehicle. “They told me to get off, fast, fast from the car,” he said. “When they saw I had a backpack they told me, ‘Have a good day at school.'” Rodriguez was returned home “safe and unharmed” although the vehicle has not been recovered and no suspects are in custody. Husband stabs wife because she criticized him for serving dry chicken

A husband became extremely angry that his wife did not appreciate the fact that he cooked her dinner, according to police in the United Kingdom. Police have arrested 61-year-old man, after being accused of stabbing his 63 year old wife. He’s been charged with one count of causing grievous bodily harm (GBH). According to the criminal complaint, they were married 33 years. They fought on a regular basis, and the wife admitted that she turns into a monster when she drinks alcohol. The husband told the court that his wife hated him for the past 30 years. He said that he took good care of her despite her shortcomings, and all he got back was abuse. For dinner one night, he cooked chicken and served it to his wife. When she complained that the chicken was very dry, that’s when he grabbed a knife and stabbed her. He then called the police to say that he killed his wife. Police officers who arrived at the scene, found her barely conscious on a couch. She did spend five weeks at the intensive care unit before being released. In court, she came to her husband’s defense, saying that she has a drinking problem. She also said that she walked into the knife. The jury found that he was not guilty of GBH. Instead, he was convicted of unlawful wounding. GBH carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, while the lesser charge of unlawful wounding is punishable by up to five years in jail. (World Wide Weird News)

The U.S. is no longer a ‘full democracy,’ a new study warns

The government of the United States got a downgrade recently: “We’re no longer a “full democracy,” according to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s latest Democracy Index. For the first time, we were bumped down to “flawed,” thanks to an “erosion of public trust in political institutions.” According to the report’s authors, a flawed democracy has free elections but “weak governance, an underdeveloped political culture and low levels of political participation.” Other countries that share this dubious honor include Italy, Japan, France and India. Rankings are based on a country’s electoral process, civil liberties, the functioning of government, political participation and political culture. That downgrade puts us at 21 in the rankings. Norway, Iceland and Sweden were ranked as the world’s most vibrant democracies, followed by New Zealand and Denmark; Canada and Ireland tied for sixth place. Syria and North Korea came, somewhat predictably, in last. (Democracy Index)

New Japanese Gym Lets You Work Out with a Cute Maid

Maid cafes have been a big part of Japanese pop culture for a while now, but the maid phenomenon is transitioning into other areas as well. For example, a new gym near Tokyo’s famous Akihabara district offers patrons the chance to work out while assisted by beautiful trainers wearing maid costumes. Can you imagine pumping some iron with a cute maid spotting you and cheering you on? Well, apparently a lot of Japanese guys can and they’re loving the idea. So much so that they’ve helped successfully crowdfund the MID GYM project thought up by a couple of young Japanese entrepreneurs. With more than a month to go to the deadline, the campaign to make the unique maid gym a reality has already met its 700,000 yen goal, on Japanese crowdfunding site CampFire. It’s not clear exactly when the Mid Gym will open its gates, but it’s definitely coming soon. FYI: the maids will provide one-on-one training assistance. (Rocket News 24)

Doomsday Clock ticks closer to apocalypse and claims 1 person is to blame

Scientists moved the hands of the Doomsday Clock closer to midnight on Thursday (1/26) amid increasing worries over nuclear weapons and climate change. Each year, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a nonprofit that sets the clock, decides whether the events of the previous year pushed humanity closer or further from destruction. The symbolic clock is now two-and-a-half minutes from midnight, the closest it’s been to midnight since 1953, when the hydrogen bomb was first tested.  Scientists blamed a cocktail of threats ranging from dangerous political rhetoric to the potential of nuclear threat as the catalyst for moving the clock closer towards doomsday. “This year’s Clock deliberations felt more urgent than usual…as trusted sources of information came under attack, fake news was on the rise, and words were used by a President-elect of the United States in cavalier and often reckless ways to address the twin threats of nuclear weapons and climate change,” Rachel Bronson, the executive director and publisher of Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, said in a statement. While many threats played into the decision to move the clock 30 seconds forward from where it was in 2016, one person in particular prompted the scientists to act. The Bulletin pointed to what the organization claimed to be President Donald Trump’s  careless rhetoric on nuclear weapons and other issues as well as his troubling stance on climate change. Oink You, Pigs!! (Not directed to cops.)

Recently, a study came out that revealed scientists have created a human-pig embryo. Scientists put human stem cells (cells that can help develop organs) into a pig embryo. A few weeks later, the embryos turned into a pre-game of human organs like the heart and liver. One giant leap for mankind, because on average, thousands of people in the US die every year while waiting for an organ donor. Scientists say it’ll be a while, but those people could eventually get by with a little help from pigs. (Washington Post)

6-Year-Old Girls Already Have Gendered Beliefs About Intelligence

A new study shows that girls may start believing that boys are smarter than them as early as six years old. Scientists told kids a story about a “really, really smart” person. And then asked them to choose who the smart person was based on photos of men and women. Most five year-old girls and boys said their own gender was the smart one. But six year-old girls were less likely to pick a photo of a woman. Many of those girls also didn’t want to play a game that they were told was for “really, really smart” kids. Not good.
