Think squirrels are harmless? Think again.
Cue Ray Stevens “Mississippi Squirrel Revival”… One squirrel went on a rampage Thursday at a senior citizens living facility in Florida, leaving three people injured and bleeding, according to a 911 call released by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. The squirrel that entered the building, explored it’s way into the activity room, and started jumping on people while biting and scratching them according to the female caller. The frantic-sounding caller tells the dispatcher, “We need some care for people here. It’s still in there and people are bleeding.” The caller tells the 911 dispatcher that an ambulance is needed because at least three people were bitten by the squirrel. In the background, someone is heard saying “the squirrel is still in here,” while another says “I feel lightheaded! I don’t feel good!” The dispatcher asks where the pint-sized creature is, to which the caller responds, “They told me they threw it out of the building.” According to reports, the injured “were doing fine.” (ABC News)
CBS News has learned about a potential terror threat for the day before the election
Sources told CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton that U.S. intelligence has alerted joint terrorism task forces that al Qaeda could be planning attacks in three states for Monday. It is believed New York, Texas and Virginia are all possible targets, though no specific locations are mentioned. U.S. authorities are taking the threat seriously, though the sources stress the intelligence is still being assessed and its credibility hasn’t been confirmed. Counterterrorism officials were alerted to the threat out of abundance of caution. (CBS News)
Quick voting guide reminder: There is no such thing as voting by text message.
It’s impossible to vote by text message, but a fake ad aimed at Clinton supporters on Twitter is urging them to save a trip to the polls and vote via cell phone. The memes, which mimic the look of Clinton’s real ads — complete with “Paid for by Hillary for President 2016” at the bottom — encourage voters to “Save time. Avoid the line” and vote early by texting “Hillary” to 59925. One fake ad was written entirely in Spanish. The ads have been tweeted from several alt-right accounts. Some of the accounts that circulated the ads appear to have been suspended, but other users were still posting them. A few people reported texting “Hillary” to the number listed. When they did, they got a variation of this response: “The ad you saw was not approved by iVisionMobile OR Hillary For America in any way. To opt-in to the real HFA list, text HFA to 47246. Reply STOP to cancel.” In another election, the ads might have been dismissed as minor mischief. But at a time when both campaigns have raised concerns about voter suppression, they stirred fears that they may have been a legitimate attempt to confuse and intimidate voters. (Washington Post)
Man cleans every veterans’ grave in cemetery by hand
Moss-covered headstones tell visitors to the Drumheller, Alberta, Canada, community cemetery that no one has tended to the graves of veterans for decades. The Cost Of Education
So far in 2016, a handful of for-profit college operators have announced plans to cease operations, closing hundreds of campuses across the country. Joining the likes of the ITT Technical Institute, Wright Career College, and Brown Mackie College brands, Heritage College and Heritage Institute closed its door abruptly last week. The for-profit chain, which operated 10 campuses around the country focusing on health sciences like massage therapy and dental hygiene, announced that it would permanently close, giving virtually no notice to students or employees. Heritage posted a notice on its website that it had decided to cease operations as the company “does not have the cash to continue to run its business. Numerous factors contributed to the circumstances including declining student population and a continued, decreased demand for the services of for-profit schools,” the notice states. The company, however, made it clear that it did not close based on wrong-doing or any kind of regulatory action. (KUSA TV)
A San Antonio police officer has been fired after he allegedly gave a sandwich filled with excrement to a homeless person.
The San Antonio Police Department fired officer Matthew Luckhurst after he allegedly placed fecal matter between two pieces of bread and gave it to a homeless person in July. Officials reportedly learned about the incident after other officers came forward after they were “disgusted” by the rumors. Luckhurst was a five-year veteran of the police force. “Firing this officer was the right thing to do. His actions were a betrayal of every value we have in our community, and he is not representative of our great police force.” according to San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor. Luckhurst’s attorney said that that his client had joked about giving the sandwich to a homeless person but never actually did so. (San Antonio Express)
