Oral sex spreading unstoppable bacteria

Oral sex is producing dangerous gonorrhea and a decline in condom use is helping it to spread, the World Health Organization has said. It warns that if someone contracts gonorrhea, it is now much harder to treat, and in some cases impossible. The sexually transmitted infection is rapidly developing resistance to antibiotics. Experts said the situation was “fairly grim” with few new drugs on the horizon. About 78 million people pick up the STI each year and it can cause infertility. The World Health Organization analysed data from 77 countries which showed gonorrhea’s resistance to antibiotics was widespread. Gonorrhea can infect the genitals, rectum and throat, but it is the last that is most concerning health officials. The disease is caused by the bacterium called Neisseria gonorrheaThe infection is spread by unprotected vaginal, oral and anal sex. Symptoms can include a thick green or yellow discharge from sexual organs, pain when urinating and bleeding between periods. However, of those infected, about one in 10 heterosexual men and more than three-quarters of women, and gay men, have no easily recognizable symptoms. Untreated infection can lead to infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease and can be passed on to a child during pregnancy. The World Health Organization is calling on countries to monitor the spread of resistant gonorrhea and to invest in new drugs. (BBC)

The sun is getting quiet and that could be bad news for Earth

The sun might soon batter us with a shower of deep space rays so intense, it could cause part of our atmosphere to collapse. Space scientists reckon we are on the verge of a “deep solar minimum,” which is a period of low activity. Unlike the name suggests, this could cause an outer layer of the atmosphere called the thermosphere to contract — and it’s not entirely clear what the effects of this could be on our planet. Professor Yvonne Elsworth at the University of Birmingham in England believes that a “fundamental change in the nature of the [sun’s magnetic] dynamo may be in progress.” It’s backed up by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory’s daily snaps, which have shown a spotless sun for 44 days in a row. This led scientists to believe that it’s nearing a tumultuous period not seen since 2008. Solar minimums are known to spark lots of cosmic ray activity that can penetrate our atmosphere. (NY Post)

Naked gunman shot dead by officers after hours-long standoff on a boat

An hours-long standoff in Eagle Harbor ended early Sunday (7/9) morning when police shot and killed an armed, naked man who pointed a rifle at them, investigators said. Investigators don’t yet know what prompted the man to start shooting in the first place, they said. No one else was injured, police said. The gunman began firing shots from a boat anchored in the waters of Eagle Harbor around 8:30 p.m. Saturday (7/8). Several people called 9-1-1 after hearing the man fire shots from an old boat that was anchored between two buoys in the middle of the harbor. The gunfire prompted evacuations and many people to take cover, police said. One of the bullets hit a wall above a homeowner’s bedroom window. One witness said “It didn’t look like he was aiming at anything particular. He was just kinda shooting and then he’d yell some things. We couldn’t quite make out anything, but he seemed angry.” As a police helicopter hovered overhead, police used measures such as flash bangs and some sort of smoking devices to get the gunman to surrender, according to witnesses at the scene. The gunman then appeared on the boat’s deck in the nude about 12:30 a.m., with a rifle and aimed it at the officers. Police then opened fire, striking the man. (KOMO TV)

Canadian landlord fined $12G for not taking shoes off in Muslim tenant’s home

A Canadian landlord who was fined $12,000 for wearing shoes in a Muslim tenant’s home said he felt “humiliated” by the harsh penalty levied by a national human rights tribunal. In an interview, John Alabi, 52, of Brampton, recounted how he went above and beyond trying to accommodate the Egyptian-born couple who lived in the apartment for two months – just to be slapped with a steep fine for the shoe incident. The Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario ordered Alabi in April to pay the tenants $6,000 each after he failed to take his shoes off in the bedroom were the couple prayed while he was showing the home to potential renters. The couple, who moved into first floor of the home in December 2014, terminated their lease on Feb. 28, 2015.  The tribunal also said Alabi “harassed” the couple and “created a poisoned housing environment.” Though he would give them 24-hour notice of the showing, he would often fail to provide a 5-minute warning. “I was humiliated, I was made to feel I have no rights, I was made to feel that I’m not wanted in society,” Alabi said. “I feel powerless. They rented my place for only two months. Two months! It’s just not fair.” The landlord claimed he doesn’t have the money to pay the fine on top of legal fees. Last week news site Rebel News Service launched a crowdfunding page to help Alabi pay for the fine. (Toronto Sun)

Razor blade sabotage found on Walmart shopping cart in Missouri

Razor blades are being found hidden in the handlebar of shopping carts at a Walmart in Festus, Mo. The first report was made on Sunday when a shopper made the disturbing discovery. A second razor blade was found by an associate during an inspection of the carts.  It is leaving some customers very concerned. Police are reviewing security footage to see who’s responsible. However, police say it is like looking for a needle in a hack stack. Walmart released this statement after last week’s incident: “It is disturbing that someone might try to injure a customer or associate, and we’re grateful no one was seriously hurt. We’ve checked all shopping carts and are currently conducting regular checks. We’ve also reviewed surveillance footage and will continue working with police to find the person responsible.” (Fox 2 Now)

Roofing company offering free guns to customers

That’s the pitch Alabama roofers are using to attract customers, promising them a free AR-15 rifle in a video ad that has created big buzz on the Internet. Zach Blenkinsopp, of Decatur-based Digital Roofing Innovations, along with co-owner Chris McGuire created the 1-minute ad to attract new customers to their business. The video shows Blenkinsopp putting on his roofing gear, which he takes from the back of his car, as he tells viewers:  “I’m not here to talk to you about roofing … I’m here to talk to you about AR-15 rifles. If you sign up for a new roof with Digital Roofing Innovations, you are going to get you a free AR-15 rifle after we complete the roof.” Blenkinsopp and McGuire say that they don’t have a big budget for marketing, so the do-it-yourself advertising campaign seemed to make the most sense. McGuire said that while critics are taking aim at the ads for promoting violence, it’s legal to get a free gun for buying a roof. When the duo completes a roof, the customer will be given a voucher for a gun, and will have to go through all the same background checks as if they were buying their own guns. (Fox 13 TV)

The fire started around 12:30 in the afternoon and was 100 percent contained by 6 p.m. However, that evening while dining at Denny’s they got some touching news. An anonymous woman had paid for the meal of about 25 firefighters eating there at the time totaling $405.
