Solar Eclipse 2017: NASA issues safety warning

NASA has issued guidelines on how to watch next month’s Great American Total Solar Eclipse. They claim the only safe way to look directly at partially eclipsed or uneclipsed Sun are via special-purpose solar filters, including “eclipse glasses” or hand-held solar viewers. NASA added that four manufacturers have certified their eclipse glasses meet the international standards: Rainbow Symphony, American Paper Optics, Thousand Oaks Optical and TSE 17. NASA has also said that the solar filter should be inspected prior to use. If it is scratched or damaged in an way, it should be discarded. Children should also be carefully supervised when using social filters. Prior to look at the Sun, NASA said users must “stand still and cover [their] eyes with [their] eclipse glasses or solar viewer before looking up at the bright Sun.” Once they’ve done that, they should turn away from the Sun and remove the filter, expressly stating the filter should not be removed while still looking at the Sun. Additionally, the Sun or eclipse should not be viewed with an unfiltered camera, telescope, binocular or telescope, for fear of “serious injury” to your eyes. A total solar eclipse (the first since 1979) is slated to happen on August 21 and will be visible across all of North America. A partial solar eclipse will last between two and three hours, with the whole continent experiencing the phenomenon. The Moon will completely block the Sun for approximately 2 minutes and 40 seconds, with stars and planets becoming visible, as well as the Sun’s outer atmosphere. Alaska town’s purr-fect unofficial cat mayor dies at 20

Stubbs, the cat who became the unofficial mayor and a tourist attraction for the small Alaska town of Talkeetna, has died at 20, his owners said. Stubbs went to sleep on Thursday (7/20) night in the town about 60 miles north of Anchorage and never woke up, the Spone family said in a statement late on Saturday. “He was a trooper until the very last day of his life,” the family said. The cat, which liked to drink water and catnip from a margarita glass, was elected unofficial mayor of Talkeetna in 1997, news reports said. The Spones acquired Stubbs when they bought Nagley’s General Store and a restaurant in 2015 from his previous owners, the family said. Stubbs, who survived a dog attack in 2013, became a tourist draw for Talkeetna, a town of about 900 people near Denali National Park. Stubbs increasingly stayed at home this year instead of going to the store, where he was frequently passed from hand to hand by people taking photos with him, the statement said. (AOL)

‘Baa Baa Land,’ The ‘Dullest Movie Ever Made’, Promises To Put You To Sleep

“Baa Baa Land,” an eight-hour movie about sheep that wants to put its subjects to sleep. The movie is being produced by Calm, a company that produces mindfulness meditation products, and will premiere in September. The self-proclaimed “slow motion epic” and “dullest movie ever made” has no plot, dialogue or actors to speak of, according to a press release. But if you’re really looking for a sound night of sleep, experts agree that watching a movie (or simply looking at a screen at all) isn’t the way to do it. Getting in some screen time before bed can end up stimulating your brain more than relaxing you. To sleep better, most experts also suggest limiting alcohol before bedtime, keeping your room dark and cool and avoiding heavy meals before bedtime. Whatever it takes to get a good night’s sleep. Beer bottle cap pops into man’s throat, doctors pop it out

The 62-year-old man in china was using his chompers to open a beverage during a drunken night on July 17th when the carbonation shot the cap straight into his throat, employees at Shiquan County Hospital said. He was drunk and did not realize what had happened until the next morning when he sought medical attention for pain and trouble breathing, the report said. Doctors at Shiquan County Hospital examined to find the bottle cap at the top of his esophagus and were able to pop the object out in minutes. “He had a lot to drink that night and fell asleep without realizing what happened,” a doctor at Shiquan County Hospital said. Fan Hongli, director of the hospital’s Department of Otolaryngology, said the sharp edges posed a deadly danger to the tender mucous membrane inside his throat. Fan reminded that habitual bottle-cap opening with teeth can also result in dental damage. Microsoft Paint and other apps are going to be discontinued by Windows 10’s Next Update

Microsoft’s graphics program Paint has been included in a list of Windows 10 features that will be either removed or no longer developed. Paint has been part of the Windows operating system since its release in 1985 and is known for its simplicity and basic artistic results. Paint’s successor, Paint 3D, will still be available. The list was issued as part of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, which rolls out in the autumn. Microsoft says that features on the list will be either removed from Windows 10 or “not in active development and might be removed in future releases”. Other features facing the axe include the Outlook Express email client, which is replaced with the built-in Mail app, and the Reader app, which will be integrated into Microsoft Edge.
