Men could become pregnant ‘tomorrow’ thanks to advances in womb transplantation

The success of womb transplants into women has paved the way for a similar operation being carried out on people born male. Now that wombs have been successfully transplanted into women born without them, ‘trans women’ – people born biologically male but who have had sex change surgery will also want a womb transplant. This would allow them to carry a baby. In recent months, there have been reports of ‘trans men’ having babies – women who have had sex change operations to become male, but still have functioning wombs. However, one problem is that the male pelvis would not allow a baby to pass through it because it is too narrow, so a man would have to give birth by caesarean section. But there was room inside a man to hold a womb. In addition, hormones might have to be given to replicate the changes that go on while a woman is pregnant. Procuring a uterus would be necessary – either from a living donor or from a brain-dead donor – a complicated, ten-hour operation. Once the uterus has been transplanted, an IVF embryo would have to be implanted. Researchers say that since the field of ‘trans medicine’ has now ‘reached the mainstream’, there are going to be trans women who want to have a uterus and will likely get the transplant. Womb transplant is still very much an experimental procedure. (Daily Mail)

Woman charged with stealing nuns’ renowned cheesecakes

New York State Police say they’ve charged a 48-year-old woman with stealing $250 worth of baked goods from an order of nuns known for their cheesecake. Troopers say the theft occurred last month at the Nuns of New Skete (SKEET) monastery in the rural town of White Creek, on the Vermont border, 35 miles northeast of Albany. The nuns sell their cheesecakes and pastries on the honor system at the monastery’s unstaffed gift shop. Police say surveillance cameras caught two women taking merchandise without leaving money in the drop box. Troopers say surveillance photos and social media postings of the images led to the arrest of a woman from North Arlington, Vermont. The other woman was identified as her 21-year-old daughter, who wasn’t charged. The cheesecakes sell for $49 and up. (Yahoo)

Anthony Weiner goes to prison

Perverted ex-pol Anthony Weiner (A.K.A. “Carlos Danger”) went into prison yesterday (11/6) for sexting with a 15-year-old girl — a crime he called his “rock bottom” after years of career-killing online antics. Reports say he spent his Sunday holed up in his Union Square apartment, where a source in the building spotted Weiner’s dad with him. Father and son then spent about five hours together ahead of Weiner’s trip to the Federal Medical Center in Devens, Mass., where’s he’s under orders to arrive for his 21-month sentence no later than 2 p.m. The lockup — on a former Army base about 40 miles northwest of Boston — is just one of two sites that offer residential treatment for sex offenders, who share a common housing unit and undergo therapy five days a week. Sears and Kmart are closing 63 more stores

Sears announced that in addition to the 250 Sears and Kmart stores it has already scheduled to close, it’s closing an additional 45 Kmart and 18 Sears locations. The stores will be closing in January 2018 and will remain open for the holidays. Sears Auto Centers will close in December, though the stores those centers are housed in will close in January. Sears says liquidation sales will begin on November 9. Just this week, Sears got a $60 million dollar loan from the hedge fund owned by its CEO, Eddie Lampert. The company also announced its Black Friday sale, which includes putting its entire store on sale through November. (AOL)

School Psychologist On Leave After Telling Radio Host To ‘Kill Yourself’ On Twitter

An employee of a Beaver County school district is in trouble after tweeting some controversial comments to a local radio host. It was a reply message on Twitter that grabbed the attention of radio host, Colin Dunlap. The tweet was sent out Wednesday night (11/1) by Matt Rehm, a school psychologist with Beaver Area School District. The tweet was in response to a picture Dunlap posted while vacationing in Disney World with family, including his daughter who was diagnosed with leukemia a year ago. They were dressed up for Halloween. In the photos, Dunlap is dressed in a costume of traditional German lederhosen. Dunlap responded by saying: “Nah. I’ll elect to have fun with my family instead.” He took a screen grab of the tweets and posted it to his Twitter page. Rehm responded by saying: “Ok. Just leave your penis in the ladies room.”

Beaver Area School District’s Superintendent Carrie Rowe issued this statement about the incident, saying in part:

“We hold all of our educators to a high standard of ethics, civility and commonsense both inside and outside of the classroom. This morning, the District put Mr. Rehm on immediate leave. I want to personally apologize on behalf of the District for this extremely unfortunate incident. As a district, we care very much about the mental health and well-being of our students and I want to send a strong message that comments of this sort, whether sent with ill intent or not, are completely and utterly wrong.”

Rehm issued a statement:

“Social media sometimes has a way of bringing out the worst in all of us. Today, I learned that I am no exception. In a completely misguided attempt at humor and the lederhosen costume in Mr. Dunlap’s photo, I made an inexcusable comment. I apologize sincerely to both him and his family and hope they will forgive this error in judgment. I also want to apologize to the entire community, including students and parents. This incident serves as a reminder of how important it is to think before we comment. Words matter, and kindness is more important than trying to get a quick laugh.”

The Beaver Area School District is conducting a full investigation into the matter. (CBS Pittsburg)

Court Rules Zoo Can’t Let Kids Swim With Crocodiles Anymore

A German zoo will no longer be able to let children participate in one of its main attractions: swimming with crocodiles and alligators. The ban—which aims to protect children from the deadly reptiles—was made official during a court ruling. Previously, the Crocodile Zoo in Friedberg, Hesse, let minors interact with the animals by feeding them and swimming in the same water, but only if a guide from the zoo was present. But now, adults will be the only ones able to swim with the crocodiles. This means that the establishment’s popular ‘Jungle’ birthday party package—which included up-close photos with the animals—will no longer be allowed for kids. The ban comes after an August 25 decision by Darmstadt regional council, which stated a barrier should be present at all times and if an adult chooses to swim with the animals, they must be warned of the serious risks of being in such close contact with the deadly creatures. Crocodile Zoo motioned to appeal the decision, but the court rejected the appeal. (Newsweek)

Saudi women riled by robot with no hjiab and more rights than they have

Women in Saudi Arabia have scorned the government’s decision to grant citizenship to a female robot who, unlike them, does not need a male guardian or have to cover her head in public. Social media was abuzz with questions about whether the robot, Sophia, who was unveiled at a technology conference in the capital Riyadh last week, will be treated like other women in the conservative kingdom now that she is a citizen. Even women married to foreigners in the gender-segregated nation cannot pass on citizenship to their children. The creation of the world’s first cyborg citizen is the latest surprise announcement from the Sunni Muslim kingdom, which granted women the right to drive last month and to watch events in all-male sports stadiums for the first time next year. A guardianship system in Saudi Arabia also requires a male family member to grant permission for a woman to study abroad, travel and other activities. Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon and Jordan are some of the Middle Eastern countries that also do not allow women married to foreigners to pass on citizenship to their children. (CNBC)
